Kid Gloves Boxing is a Simi Valley boxing program run by Robert Ortiz that uses boxing to build confidence and self-esteem, for everyone from young kids and teens to adults and seniors. Tricia and I visited the gym to learn what it’s about.
What is Kid Gloves Boxing about?
Robert told us people sometimes think boxing is a rough sport, but what they do is build confidence and self-esteem. In his words, he wants to be “a dream builder for the community.” The program works with kids facing challenges like autism, works with people with Parkinson’s, and has a senior class too.
What classes do they offer?
When we filmed, they offered boxing classes for kids and adults, and a full-time Muay Thai kickboxing coach, former kickboxing champion Victor Menendez. Robert’s goal was a one-stop gym with ground work and wrestling too.
Five generations of boxing
Robert’s family has been boxing for five generations. His grandfather and dad boxed, and the family has worked around some of the biggest names in the sport.
Giving back
Robert also puts on community fight shows, including an anti-bullying show, to raise money for youth in the community.
