Kindling Studios is a Camarillo art studio for artists with disabilities, and in spring 2023 it brought an art residency and show called Nature at Your Door to the Simi Valley Town Center. I stopped by to see the artwork and meet the people behind it.
What is Kindling Studios?
Kindling Studios, powered by IGNITE Collective, is a studio in Camarillo where artists with disabilities learn, practice, and sell their art. Sarah Pinner told me the artists work in all kinds of media, including weaving, painting, and papier-mâché, and some pieces are community projects everyone works on together.
Why does the art show matter?
Clinical director Tina Epson explained that selling their work is the artists’ livelihood and meaningful work. Having a big space to show the art, do demonstrations, and meet the community was something they hadn’t been able to do since COVID. Families came from as far as Arkansas, and the Acorn newspaper came out to help spread the word.
How can you support Kindling Studios?
Buy their art, take one of their art classes, or visit the studio in Camarillo. Look up Kindling Studios online for current classes and shows.
