Play It Again Sports in Simi Valley sells new and gently used sports equipment for just about every sport, takes trade-ins, and has been in business locally since 1993. I’ve been buying my family’s sports gear there since I moved to Simi Valley, so Tricia and I sat down with owner Jim to talk about it.
Why buy used sports equipment?
Kids grow out of gear fast, and sports equipment adds up. Jim told us the idea started with recycling and reusing, back in Minneapolis where hockey gear is expensive. At Play It Again Sports, used gear is often discounted around 50 percent from new. About half the inventory is new and half is used, and because it’s a national franchise, new gear is priced like the big-box stores.
Can you trade in old gear?
Yes. Bring in that old baseball glove, wetsuit, or boogie board, and trade it toward what you need. Jim says that’s how you make your own discount, even on new stuff.
What do they carry?
- Fitness: elliptical machines, exercise bikes, free weights, and kettlebells.
- Team sports: baseball, softball, soccer, football helmets, and more.
- Everything else: golf, tennis, pickleball, skateboards, bikes, and surfboards.
- Winter gear: around October, the store switches over to snowboarding and snow sports.
Supporting Simi Valley youth sports
A lot of people in the community have told me how generous Jim has been, sponsoring kids’ sports teams for years. The store has been a big sponsor of Simi Valley youth soccer, which holds registration there, and of local baseball and football leagues.
