The vibrant colors, rhythmic music, and aromatic scents of traditional Mexican cuisine filled the air at Strathearn Park this past weekend as Simi Valley came together to celebrate the 11th Annual Día de los Muertos festival. What an incredible experience it was to witness our community honor this beautiful tradition that celebrates life, remembrance, and cultural heritage.

A Festival Full of Life and Color

From the moment you entered the park, you could feel the energy and love that went into this event. The Simi Valley Historical Society outdid themselves once again, creating a space where tradition met community in the most meaningful way.

The festival grounds were transformed into a cultural showcase featuring everything that makes Día de los Muertos such a special celebration. Colorful papel picado banners danced in the breeze, while the scent of copal incense mixed with the delicious aromas from food vendors throughout the park.

Traditional Performances That Captivated

One of the absolute highlights of the day was watching the traditional Aztec and Folklorico dancers. Their elaborate costumes, precise movements, and passionate performances brought centuries-old traditions to life right here in Simi Valley.

The Aztec dancers, with their impressive feathered headdresses and intricate footwork, commanded attention with every beat of the drum. Meanwhile, the Folklorico performers twirled in their colorful, flowing skirts, their synchronized movements telling stories of Mexican heritage and pride.

Seeing families gathered around their ofrendas, sharing stories and memories, was a powerful reminder of what Día de los Muertos is truly about—celebrating the lives of those we’ve lost and keeping their memories alive.

No festival is complete without incredible food, and this event delivered! Local vendors offered authentic Mexican cuisine, from traditional pan de muerto (sweet bread of the dead) to tamales, tacos, and so much more. The lines were long, but absolutely worth the wait.

Local artisans also showcased their talents with beautiful handmade crafts, including sugar skulls, papel picado, traditional pottery, and Day of the Dead-themed artwork. It was wonderful to see so many talented crafters sharing their work and keeping these artistic traditions alive.
